The Thrifty Cut that’s not just for Christmas
Free Range Gammon - the Thrifty Cut that’s not just for Christmas
A traditional, visually stunning, Sunday Roast, Ham and Chips, a Ham Salad, Potted Ham, Pea and Ham Soup, and moreish Ham Sandwiches - just some of the things to try - all from one really low-cost, Thrifty joint!
Not just for Christmas!
Traditionally one of the high points of the festive season - a Smoked - or Unsmoked Gammon Joint is not just for Christmas! It is equally perfect for Summer Sundays or weekdays - providing a lighter Summer roast - and then all the delicious things you can do with Leftovers for dinners, suppers, picnics and snacks - and all from one joint!
As Mary Berry says:
“So many people cook a gammon at Christmas time, but don’t think to cook it for any other occasion. I think it makes a lovely summer Sunday lunch served hot or cold.”
And Nigel Slater shares Mary’s enthusiasm:
“Every summer I cook a piece of gammon, with its candy pink meat and luscious fat. I wonder why I don't do it more often. There is good value in its copious flesh and much, much pleasure in knowing that it will keep us in sandwiches (with watercress and stinging hot mustard, please) for several days after.”
Blythburgh Pork
However supermarket Gammon just doesn’t cut it - for that sublime, Free Range, hand-raised Gammon true texture and taste
We only stock Free Range Blythburgh Pork because it has a traditional flavour and succulence that has been largely forgotten in today's industrially produced Pork
So even better when we only use Premium Quality Free Range naturally-reared Blythburgh Pork to hand prepare our Gammons at our Highbury Barn Shop
The difference between Ham and Gammon
Just to clear up the difference between Ham and Gammon - Gammon is raw and Ham is ready-to-eat. Gammon has been cured in the same way as Bacon whereas Ham has been dry-cured or cooked. Once you've cooked your Gammon, you can call it Ham.
Versatile and delicious
Here are a few recipes which illustrate just how versatile and delicious a Gammon can be - at a very low and thrifty cost.
