Savour Otter Valley Organic Chickens

Superbly sumptuous, succulent Organic Chickens


Allowed time to mature naturally

We take great care in selecting our Organic produce only from farms where the highest standards of animal welfare are practised and that rear their birds in the traditional way - being free to roam and forage, fed on an additive-free natural diet, free from growth enhancers - and allowed time to mature naturally - to yield the most moist, deliciously flavoured meat



Our Organic Chickens are raised at Otter Valley Farms which are situated in the Blackdown Hills of East Devon an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Family run business

The Farm is a family run business, which has been established for over 40 years producing some of the finest Organic Chickens  

Outstanding Quality

They pride themselves on the excellent, outstanding quality, texture and taste of each Chicken they produce.

Otter Valley Organic Chicken are reared on 3 separate sites,  

Quiet and natural

The first site is a small mixed organic farm on the edge of Dawlish hidden away at the end of a steep valley protected either side by vast acres of woodland.



The land is unspoilt and ideal for the Chicken as it is so quiet and natural.

Acres of open fields to roam

The second site is on the other side of the hill from Dawlish at Kingsteignton, again it is hidden low down below the surrounding hills and provides a beautiful view across to the popular Tors on Dartmoor.



The land is full of natural wildlife and the Chicken have acres of open fields full of rich clover to roam across.  

Free to forage 

The third site is on the edge of Exmoor at Huishchampflower just outside Wiveliscombe. The landscape is of natural rolling hills, deep valleys and forests completely unspoilt. 



Otter Valley Chicken are free to roam and forage across all three idyllic locations 


All the farms have been chosen because of their peaceful location and natural environment. Otter Valley Poultry believes that it is paramount the Chicken, can enjoy a stress-free lifestyle.  

Slow growing Strain

Otter Valley Organic Free-Range Chicken are reared from day old Chicks from a carefully chosen slow growing Strain.  



These Chickens take between 10 and 12 weeks to mature before slaughtering, which is approximately twice as long as conventional Chickens.  

Warm and cosy

The Chickens are reared for the first three weeks under a gas heater ensuring they stay warm and cosy. ​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​


After three weeks the side panels are opened, and the birds are free to leave the shelter to roam and forage across the thick clover pastures.  ​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​


As night falls the birds are keen to return to the shelter as they know they will be warm and safe inside the house, away from any predators such as Foxes  ​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​


The pastures are free of any pesticides and fertilisers.  

Less stressful

When the Chicken are ready for slaughter they are caught and transported by members of the family.

They only catch at night as this is far less stressful than in daylight.

Own on-farm Abattoir

The Chicken are then expertly processed through the family’s own on-farm Abattoir reducing any stressful travelling or handling  ​​​​​​​
​​​​​​​


Evisceration or dressing is all done manually by their own skilled Butchers as they passionately believe in careful handling of the Chicken even once it’s been slaughtered.  

Superb texture and taste

Chickens are wet plucked by hand and hung New York style to allow the breakdown of the Meat so they can mature improving the superb texture and taste. ​​​​​​​

Distinctive texture with a slightly gamier flavour

Otter Valley Organic Chickens have a distinctive texture with a slightly gamier flavour to the Leg and a significantly sturdier bone structure.  ​​​​​​​

Chef Hillary Sterling's epic Chicken at Vic's in New York gets its juiciness and deep flavour from brining, air drying, and marinating. She serves the bird on a mix of charred Broccoli, Onions, and Fingerling Potatoes, fiery from the Chillis and fresh from the Basil, with a bright kick of Red Wine Vinegar. Six heads of Garlic mellow and sweeten after roasting, adding a caramelized flavour to the dressing and the marinade.
